Implementation of Maximum Limits for Contaminants and Pesticide Residues in Fresh Food

To ensure the quality and safety of food products distributed in Indonesia, the National Food Agency (BAPANAS) has issued Regulation No. 10 and No. 15 of 2024, which set out maximum allowable limits for contaminants and pesticide residues in fresh food, particularly fresh food of plant origin.
National Food Agency Regulation No. 10 of 2024
This regulation establishes maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides in fresh plant-based food such as fruits, vegetables, and grains. The purpose is to ensure that any pesticide residues present remain at levels considered safe for human consumption.
Types of pesticides regulated include:
- Insecticides
- Herbicides
- Fungicides
The implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is strongly encouraged to minimize the risk of contamination from the agricultural stage.
National Food Agency Regulation No. 15 of 2024
This regulation governs the maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) allowed in fresh food circulating in the market. These contaminants include:
- Heavy metals (e.g., mercury, lead, cadmium)
- Pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli)
- Mycotoxins (e.g., aflatoxins in peanuts and spice)
The aim is to ensure that food products are safe for consumption and do not pose health risks to consumers.
Understanding the Difference
These two regulations are complementary in protecting food safety. Contaminants typically refer to hazardous substances introduced during post-harvest handling or processing, while pesticide residues, result from the application of agricultural chemicals during cultivation. Both must be carefully controlled to ensure food distributed to consumers is free from harmful substances.
